Agafay Desert Weather by Month: Temperatures, Sunset Times and What to Expect

Planning · Updated

Dust rising behind vehicles on a sunny day in the Agafay Desert
Short answerAgafay is mild and sunny from October to May (around 18–28 °C by day) and very hot from June to September (often 35–42 °C). Nights are cool all year and can drop to 3–6 °C in December and January, so a warm layer is essential for evening activities and desert camps.

Agafay climate in short

Agafay shares the semi-arid climate of Marrakech, but because it sits on an open plateau with no buildings, it feels hotter at midday and colder at night. Rain is rare and falls mostly between November and March. Wind can raise dust on some afternoons, which is why a scarf is provided for quad rides.

The figures below are typical averages based on long-term data for the Marrakech area (see Marrakech climate on Wikipedia); always check a forecast a few days before your trip.

Sunset times are approximate local time and shift by a few minutes through each month; Morocco may also change clocks during Ramadan.

Spring (March–May): the sweet spot

Warm days, fresh nights, the Atlas still dusted with snow in March, and green patches after winter rain. Any activity works at any time of day. It is also the busiest season, so book a few days ahead.

Summer (June–September): ride at sunset

Midday heat is intense. Choose the sunset quad or the sunset camel ride, drink plenty of water and wear a hat. Read our full summer survival guide.

Autumn (October–November): golden light

Temperatures drop back to pleasant levels and the light is beautiful for photos. October is one of our favourite months for the overnight camp.

Winter (December–February): bring a jacket

Days are often sunny and perfect for riding, but temperatures fall quickly after sunset. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and closed shoes. See Agafay in winter and our what to wear guide.

Does it rain in Agafay?

Only a few days a month in winter. Heavy rain can make tracks muddy; in that case we move your activity to another slot or day.
