The short verdict
We are a local Agafay company, so we will be honest about both sides. Agafay is not the Sahara of postcards. It is a stone desert of hills, and it is close, easy and spectacular at sunset. For most visitors staying two to five nights in Marrakech, it is the best desert experience they can fit into their trip.
Pros: why travellers love Agafay
- Close to Marrakech: 40–50 minutes, so no long road trip and no night on a bus.
- Huge open landscape with the snowy High Atlas in winter and spring.
- Something for everyone: quad biking, buggy, camel rides, dinner shows and camps.
- Silence and stars after the noise of the medina.
- Good value compared with a multi-day Sahara tour.
Cons: what might disappoint you
- No big sand dunes. If you expect Erg Chebbi, read Agafay vs Merzouga first.
- It is popular. At sunset you will see other groups and camps on the hills.
- Dust and heat in summer; midday rides are tough from June to September.
- Quality varies between operators — check what is included before you book (see how to book an Agafay tour).
Who should go — and who should skip it
| Agafay is perfect for… | Consider another option if… |
|---|---|
| Short stays (2–5 days) in Marrakech | You want golden sand dunes |
| Couples, families, friends | You have 7+ days and want a Sahara road trip |
| First-time quad riders | You want total solitude |
| A romantic dinner under the stars | You travel in July at midday |
How to make Agafay worth every minute
- Go in the afternoon and stay for sunset — the landscape turns pink and gold.
- Combine activities: the quad, camel and dinner combo is the best value.
- Choose two hours of riding if you love driving: the sunset 2-hour quad reaches further viewpoints.
- Sleep there once: the overnight camp gives you the sunrise without crowds.
What our guests say most often
The comment we hear most is “we did not expect it to be so close and so big”. The second: “we should have stayed for dinner”. Plan a full afternoon and evening if you can.
